What is Om (Aum)?
Om (written as ॐ) is a sacred syllable and symbol originating in the Vedic tradition of India. It represents the sound of the universe and is used as a mantra in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.
Origin & History
First described in the Upanishads (c. 800–200 BCE), Om is considered the most sacred syllable in Sanskrit. It appears at the beginning of most Hindu prayers and mantras.
Spiritual Meaning
Om represents the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, deep sleep) and the transcendent fourth state. Its three sounds (A-U-M) represent creation, preservation, and dissolution.
Healing Associations
Chanting Om is used to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and deepen meditation. Studies show Om chanting creates vagal nerve stimulation similar to the response seen in deep meditation.
