Name clarity note
The trade name 'tongkat ali' is used almost exclusively for Eurycoma longifolia but products sold under this name may contain other species or adulterants. Due to high demand and price, adulteration is common. The name 'tonka ali' is a marketing variant of the same plant, not a different species. Genuine Malaysian government-approved exports ('Malaysian Tongkat Ali') provide some quality assurance.
Quality notes
Heavy metal contamination (particularly mercury and lead) is a significant concern—Malaysian soil often contains elevated heavy metals and Eurycoma roots absorb them. Always buy from brands with published third-party heavy metal testing. Standardised water-soluble root extract (2% eurycomanone) is the most studied form (LJ100, PhytoGold). Malaysian government-certified products preferred.
