What it is
Hops are the cone-shaped flowers of a climbing plant related to cannabis. The female flowers (strobiles) contain compounds with sedative effects.
Traditional use
Used in European herbal medicine since medieval times for insomnia and restlessness. Hop pillows were used to promote sleep.
What modern research suggests (Promising)
Studies show sedative effects, particularly when combined with valerian. 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (a metabolite) has CNS depressant properties.
